we live on a mountain some 200m above the general Bogota savannah (already at 2650m), in the NW of the city, and
thankfully out of the horrid pollution of the permanent traffic jam.
driving out of this haven into the traffic
normally affords me a beautiful view of the eastern andes. it helps me forget how much i loathe the traffic cops here
who do nothing but cause traffic jams or play games on their mobile phones. but yesterday at sunset the mountains were
shrouded in cloud, and there was a pink and golden glow along their length as they hugged the andes tightly.
the
nights and mornings have been completely misty but last night we were lucky to have a view of the lunar eclipse midway,
a clear crisp sky and relative silence at 11pm...this morning the close mist didnt lift until 10am and the sky is pure
white.
these wintry days begin magnificently with sunshine and the afternoons are filled with dramatic 360 degree storms
of lightning and thunder...the airports close, the streets flood and pedestrians still dont resort to raincoats but
struggle with unravelling umbrellas or running with folios over their heads.
as i drove to class near the big stadiums
where every teaching night there are either concerts (luis miguel, sean paul) or football games, i saw an older woman holding
her mothers hand. In the downpour the mum was jogging faster than her daughter, half her age. no umbrella, no raincoats,
but they were laughing.
